Feast of Santa Giovanna di Valois

Santa Giovanna di Valois, ora pro nobis
“I am ugly in body but I want a beautiful soul.” ~ St. Joan of Valois

February 4th is the Feast of St. Joan of Valois (1464-1505), Duchess of Berry and Foundress. The second daughter to King Louis XI of France, St. Joan was neglected because of her deformities. Hunchbacked and pockmarked, she was ridiculed and humiliated by her reluctant husband, Louis, Duke of Orleans and future King Louis XII of France and Naples. The marriage was annulled in 1498 by Pope Alexander VI when the Duke ascended the throne. In 1500 St. Joan founded the Order of the Annunciation of the Blessed Virgin Mary of Bourges (the Annonciades). She is the patron saint of difficult circumstances.

In celebration, we’re posting a prayer by St. Joan of Valois. The accompanying photo comes courtesy of Father Eugene Carrella. The holy card is part of Father Carrella’s impressive collection of religious artifacts. Evviva Santa Giovanna di Valois!

Prayer by St. Joan of Valois

O Mary, Virgin and Mother of Jesus, Grant that I think, say, and do all that is most pleasing to God and to you.
