(Above & below) Details of the funerary monument |
Among the many religious and artistic treasures to be found in the Cattedrale di Santa Maria degli Angeli, San Matteo e San Gregorio VII in Salerno is the Gothic tomb of Queen Margherita di Durazzo, consort of King Charles III of Naples.
Sculpted shortly after her death in 1412 by the great Antonio Baboccio da Piperno, the tomb’s rectangular sarcophagus is adorned with a continuous relief sculpture of Her Majesty surrounded by her courtly retinue.
Supported by four caryatids on small pedestals, above stands a marble canopy with two attendants pulling back the carved drapery to reveal the Queen resting on an inscribed panel.
Traces of paint can still be seen on the tomb's figures and floral background.
