San Severino di Agaune, ora pro nobis |
February 11th is the feast of St. Severinus of Agaunum, Monk and Abbot. Born in Burgundy to a noble family, St. Severinus joined the Abbey of Saint-Maurice d’Agaune, Valais, at an early age. Renowned for his sanctity, he was elected abbot and performed, through prayer, many healing miracles. Most famously, he was summoned to the court of Clovis I in Lutetia (Paris) and cured the ailing King from an unremitting fever. On the journey home, St. Severinus stopped at Château-Landon in Gatinais for refuge and, foreseeing his death, died in 507. The monastery was later renamed Abbaye Saint-Séverin in his honor. The Saint’s relics were desecrated and scattered by the Huguenots when they sacked the church during the French Wars of Religion (1562-’98).
In celebration, we’re posting a prayer to St. Severinus of Agaunum in Italian. The accompanying photo comes courtesy of Father Eugene Carrella. The holy card is part of Father Carrella’s impressive collection of religious artifacts. Evviva San Severino di Agaune!
Preghiera
