Celebrating the Feast of San Francesco di Paola with Pizza and Paulaner

Tuesday evening, I joined a few close friends in Dyker Heights, Brooklyn for our Annual Feast of San Francesco di Paola Pizza and Paulaner Celebration. An intimate affair, our jovial party enjoyed a variety of homemade and store-bought Duosiciliani (southern Italian) specialties (pizza, crocchè di patate, fritto misto, arancini, etc.) while imbibing a few pints of Paulaner bier from Munich, Germany.

Perfectly complimenting the fried and savory dishes, for me—and untold others—the hoppy brew and pizza are a match made in heaven. In addition to tasting great, we chose Paulaner because it was originally brewed to support the charitable works of the Minims, a mendicant order founded by St. Francis of Paola in the fifteenth-century. The name Paulaner itself is a corruption of Paola, the town in Calabria where St. Francis was born and the likeness of the holy man (or one of his friars) graces the label on the bottle.

Evviva San Francesco di Paola!
