My Heart Rejoices: Preparing for the Canonization of Bartolo Longo

As the day of Blessed Bartolo Longo’s canonization approaches, I find myself overwhelmed with joy, gratitude, and awe. His story has always spoken to me—not simply as history, but as a living witness of the limitless mercy of God. A man who once wandered far from the Church, he became, through the Rosary, a true apostle of Our Lady and a builder of one of the greatest sanctuaries in Christendom.

What moves me most is that Bartolo’s life shows that sanctity is not reserved for the already-perfect, but for those willing to let grace transform them. He gave his days to repairing what sin had torn apart: teaching the Rosary, serving the poor, and raising up a spiritual home for countless souls in Pompeii. In him, I see the concrete proof that God’s love is stronger than any past mistake.

As I prepare for his canonization, I feel called to renew my own devotion to prayer and mercy. It is a reminder that holiness is not a distant ideal but a call addressed to each of us, here and now. Through Bartolo Longo, the Rosary resounds again as a weapon of peace, conversion, and healing. My heart rejoices, because in his elevation to the heavens, I glimpse once more the radiant truth: mercy triumphs, grace abounds, and the path to heaven lies open. Blessed Bartolo Longo, ora pro nobis.

In celebration, we offer this Novena prayer:

All-powerful and merciful God, in Blessed Bartolo, a promoter of the Rosary of the Blessed Virgin, you showed a wonderful example of holiness and of charity for needy children and orphans. Through his prayers, may we learn to see Christ your Son in our neighbors and to love him through them. We ask this through our Lord Jesus Christ, your Son, who lives and reigns with you and the Holy Spirit, one God, for ever and ever. Amen

Novena to San Tommaso D'Aquino

San Tommaso D'Aquino, ora pro nobis
Pray novena for nine consecutive days, February 26th — March 6th, in preparation for the feast celebrated on March 7th. Evviva San Tommaso D'Aquino!

Saint Thomas Aquinas, patron of students and schools, I thank God for the gifts of light and knowledge God bestowed on you, which you used to build up the church in love. I thank God, too, for the wealth and richness of theological teaching you left in your writings. Not only were you a great teacher, you lived a life of virtue and you made holiness the desire of your heart. If I cannot imitate you in the brilliance of your academic pursuits, I can follow you in the humility and charity that marked your life. As Saint Paul said, charity is the greatest gift, and is open to all. Pray for me that I may grow in holiness and charity. Pray also for Catholic schools and for all students. In particular, please obtain the favor I ask during this novena. (Mention your request). Amen.

Novena Prayers in Honor of Saint Hubert

Sant'Uberto di Liegi, ora pro nobis
Pray Novena to Saint Hubert, Patron Saint of Hunters, for nine consecutive days, October 25th to November 2nd, in preparation for the feast on November 3rd. Evviva Sant’Uberto!
Prayer to be an honorable hunter

By the grace of God may I always honor, thank and adore the Lord God who created the animals and saw that each species was good. Let me love the God who made humans in His own image and likeness and set them over the whole world, to have dominion over the fish of the sea, and over the birds of the air, and over the cattle, and over all the earth, and over every creeping thing that creeps upon the earth (Gen 1:26). By my honorable conduct as a hunter let me give a good example and teach new hunters principles of honor, so that each new generation can show respect for God, other hunters and the animals, and enjoy the dignity of the hunt.

Prayer for honest hunt

Lord, may I make an honest count of game, respecting the legal limits of game in order to preserve the balance of life and death among the animals. May I so love the truth that I always give an honest recounting of the hunting stories while keeping them interesting to my friends. May I also listen to my friends’ stories with enjoyment and without envy.

Prayer against selfishness

Lord, I do not need to take every animal in the forest, nor must I take the best or nothing. Guide me to seek the best and to accept what I get. May I never take more than my limit and let me always help maintain the balance of nature in relationship to the environment and the numbers of animals there. Keep me aware of the needs and desires of other hunters while I always try to hunt at my own best skill.

Prayer for conservation of natural resources

Lord God, You have put all things under man’s dominion. Guide us to take the animals that need to be culled for the preservation of their species and the rest of the ecosystem. Let me always respect the animals I have hunted. Never let me torment them, mock them, or made them objects of ridicule. When I take an animal’s life let me always maintain respect for the wonder of its existence and the importance of its meat to those who need it for sustenance.

Prayer for safety

Pray for the good sense to care for my weapon and to carry it and fire it responsibly. Pray for the animals, that the shots are clean and do not cause unnecessary suffering to the animal.

Prayer for successful hunt

Lord, I pray that I may take down the game in as painless a way as possible. May I recognize my limits and take the shots I know I can make, not taking a shot that risks maiming or wounding an animal unnecessarily.

Prayer of thanksgiving for the hunt

Lord, I thank You for the opportunity to go out on the hunt. I thank You for the time alone to think and reflect on life. I thank You for the time with hunting friends, enjoying good fellowship, good stories, meals and drinks. Thank You for the beauty seen during the hunt and for the game taken and shared. I thank You especially for a safe hunt for myself and for all the hunters who share the field.

Prayer to share the fruit of the hunt

Lord, I am so blessed to be able to hunt and I appreciate the blessings You have bestowed upon me. Yet I know that so many others are in great need. Give me the grace to share the food of the hunt not only with my family and friends but also with those who have greater need: the hungry and the poor. May my sharing with them be one small part of my continuing care for your poor. As they ask You, Father, for their daily bread, use me as one small instrument to help provide it to them.

Prayer to hunt for souls, like St. Hubert

Lord, you spoke to St. Hubert and converted him to You during a stag hunt. You changed him into a hunter of souls, yet you continued to use his skills as a hunter to open minds to your Gospel. I ask that you make me into a hunter of souls above all other hunting activities. May I look for the opportunities to speak of You and Your salvation. Let the hunting camp itself be a place that uplifts the soul. May my time alone be an opportunity to pray and listen to You. May all the actions of the rest of my life be a constant hunt for You, for the opportunities you give me to evangelize, and to target the souls most in need of Your love.

Novena to the Holy Face of Jesus

Holy Face of Jesus, have mercy on us
Pray novena for nine consecutive days in preparation for the Feast of the Holy Face of Jesus on Martedì Grasso.*

O Lord Jesus Christ, in presenting ourselves before Thy adorable Face, to ask of Thee the graces of which we stand in most need, we beseech Thee above all, to grant us that interior disposition of never refusing at any time what Thou requires of us by Thy holy commandments and divine inspirations. Amen.

O Good Jesus, who has said, “Ask and you shall receive, seek and ye shall find, knock and it shall be opened to you,” grant us O Lord, that faith which obtains all, or supply in us what may be deficient. Grant us, by the pure effect of Thy charity, and for Thy eternal glory, the graces that we need and that we seek from Thy infinite mercy. Amen.

Be merciful to us, O my God, and reject not our prayers, when amid our afflictions, we call upon Thy Holy Name and seek with love and confidence Thy adorable Face. Amen.

O Almighty and Eternal God, look upon the Face of Thy Son Jesus. We present It to Thee with confidence to implore Thy pardon. The All-Merciful Advocate opens His Lips to plead our cause. Hearken to His cries, behold His tears, O God, and through His infinite merits, hear Him when He intercedes for us poor miserable sinners. Amen.

Adorable Face of Jesus, my only love, my light and my life, grant that I may know Thee, love Thee and serve Thee alone, that I may live with Thee, by Thee and for Thee. Amen.

Eternal Father, I offer Thee the adorable Face of Thy Beloved Son for the honor and glory of Thy Name, for the conversion of sinners and the salvation of the dying. O Divine Jesus, through Thy Face and Name, save us. Our Hope is in the virtue of Thy Holy Name! Amen.

* The novena prayer was reprinted from www.traditioninaction.org. Pictured is a blessed Holy Face of Jesus medal with the Latin inscription based on Psalm 66:2: Illumina, Domine, vultum tuum super nos (May, O Lord, the light of Thy countenance shine upon us). The medal is a shield of courage and a guarantee of love and mercy that Jesus wishes to give the world. Devotion to the Holy Face of Jesus is a special defense against the diabolical snares plaguing the hearts of men today. All who devoutly wear the medal and visit the Blessed Sacrament every Tuesday (if possible) in reparation for the outrages committed against Our Lord during His Passion and the daily sacrileges and profanations against the Sacrament of the Holy Eucharist, will be fortified in Faith and promised a happy death under the loving gaze of Christ Himself.

Novena to San Lorenzo Martire

San Lorenzo Martire, ora pro nobis
Pray Novena to San Lorenzo Martire for nine consecutive days, August 1st to August 9th, in preparation for the Feast on August 10th. Evviva San Lorenzo!

Glorious Martyr, St. Lawrence, we come to you in humility as we see your greatness and your power of intercession with God. You were so strong in your faith that you readily suffered tortures from the pagans and died a cruel death becoming an outstanding witness to Christ and His Church. As we discern your strong faith we believe in your powerful patronage and pray you to obtain for us a living faith, an unwavering hope and love of God and of our neighbor. Keep us pure and chaste; make us obedient to our elders. Help us to help the poor, the down trodden, the sick and those in trials and difficulties. Touch the tepid Christians and enkindle in them the fire of faith, and give the non-Christians the grace of faith in Christ. As the pagans were moved to your faith in Christ so may your immortal faith make the unbelievers embrace the true faith that the Kingdom of God may flourish. Assist us always to overcome our trials and temptations. Grant that we may always live a true Christian life and finally be victorious in the battle of faith that being true witnesses to Christ we may die in Him to join you and other saints and live for all eternity in His Kingdom to praise God forever and ever. Amen

O St. Lawrence, who in the flower of youth suffered and died for the faith, hear our prayers. With confidence we fly to your patronage. Obtain for us deep faith, strong hope, a sincere love of God and neighbor, unsullied chastity and humble obedience. Inspire us to succor the poor, the needy, the sick and the afflicted. Lead the erring back to the Father’s Home. May God’s Kingdom spread far and wide on earth. Help us in all our needs especially (Mention your request here…) Finally grant that we live as the worthy people of God, die a holy death and join you in the heavenly bliss forever. Amen.

O holy St. Lawrence, Apostle and Martyr, great in virtue and rich in miracles, near kinsman of Jesus Christ, faithful intercessor of all who invoke your special patronage in time of need to you, I have recourse from the depth of my heart and humbly beg to whom God has given such great power to come to my assistance. Help me in my present urgent petition. In return I promise to make your name known and cause you to be invoked.

Say 3 Pater Noster, 3 Ave Maria and 3 Gloria Patri

St. Lawrence pray for us and all who invoke your aid. Amen

Novena in Honor of the Transfiguration of Our Lord

Santissimo Salvatore, have mercy on us
Pray the novena in honor of the Transfiguration of Our Lord for nine consecutive days, July 28th to August 5th, in preparation for the Feast on August 6th.

First Day (July 28)

In the Transfiguration, heaven and earth meet, humanity and divinity, time and eternity. Give me the grace to see how powerful you are. You are master of the universe. If my prayer is not answered, it is not because you cannot do what I want but that you have a different and better plan for me. I ask you especially for [here name your intention]. Our Father – Hail Mary – Glory Be

Second Day (July 29)

The prophet Malachi promised that Elijah would return as a sign the Messiah had arrived. Elijah and Moses appeared with Christ in his Transfiguration. Open our eyes to see how you speak to us in history and throughout our lives. You always keep your promises. Help us learn to read the signs of the times. I ask you especially for [here name your intention]. Our Father – Hail Mary – Glory Be

Third Day (July 30)

Peter blurted out the first thing that came into his head, as we often do. Help me to keep a guard on my mouth: not to gossip or criticise, not to be hurtful or rude. Help me also to be careful if I tell other people how they should be living their lives. I ask you especially for [here name your intention]. Our Father – Hail Mary – Glory Be

Fourth Day (July 31)

Finally, Peter said, “Lord, it is good to be here”. Give me the grace to be with you and to be glad to be with you, trusting you with my life; to know I am not alone in life; that you love me and have a wonderful plan for me if I trust you. I ask you especially for [here name your intention]. Our Father – Hail Mary – Glory Be

Fifth Day (August 1)

At the Transfiguration, Jesus tried to prepare his disciples for the crucifixion. You tell us that if we want to follow you we should take up our cross; but we always hope that the cross will go away. Give me the courage to believe that you carry my cross with me and that it will not crush me. I ask you especially for [here name your intention]. Our Father – Hail Mary – Glory Be

Sixth Day (August 2)

In the Transfiguration there is a glimpse of your glory, a glimpse of your divine nature. Give me this grace: to see your power in my life and have a desire for holiness. Help me to believe I will not lose myself if I follow your teachings. I ask you especially for [here name your intention]. Our Father – Hail Mary – Glory Be

Seventh Day (August 3)

The disciples who saw your Transfiguration were terrified, but you told them to stand up and not to be afraid. Help me remember this. When life knocks me down and when I am afraid, help me to stand up and walk onward with you. I ask you especially for [here name your intention]. Our Father – Hail Mary – Glory Be

Eighth Day (August 4)

Moses and Elijah are living in the presence of Christ in the Transfiguration. All who face death with faith in you will live in your presence for ever. Help us not to fear death. I ask you especially for [here name your intention]. Our Father – Hail Mary – Glory Be

Ninth Day (August 5)

As in eternal life I will see your glory, so at the resurrection of the dead I, too, will be glorified. This life is only a small part of my life in you. Help me to look forward in hope to heaven and to the resurrection of the dead. I ask you especially for [here name your intention]. Our Father – Hail Mary – Glory Be
