Discovered in 1968 in the Tempa del Prete necropolis near Poseidonia (Paestum) by archaeologist Mario Napoli, the scene is interpreted by some to represent the passage from life to death. The frescoes are the only example of Greek wall painting from the Orientalizing, Archaic, or Classical period to survive in its entirety.
